Welcome Message
Welcome Message from Department Head
The Department of Civil Engineering at the Nagoya University conducts a wide range of education and research in civil engineering, from basic science and engineering to applied technology, to build a better future society. Our department features an international educational environment with a high percentage of international students. In addition to traditional classroom lectures, daily classes incorporate group work in which students can actively participate, creating and discussing their own ideas in connection with their peers, fostering new insights, coordination skills, and the ability to learn from mistakes, and providing an environment in which students can grow together.
This year, our department will continue to work together to create an educational environment where faculty and students can discuss and consult more freely and openly.
The Department of Civil Engineering at the Nagoya University was founded on April 1, 1961, in response to the severe damage caused by the Isewan Typhoon that hit the Tokai region on September 26, 1959. Since its establishment, the Department of Civil Engineering has been conducting research activities toward the creation of a new society and a new national land that is both resilient and sustainable.
However, looking back over the past decade or so, we have seen an increase in the severity and frequency of natural disasters, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016, which was the first in a series of earthquakes to have two intensity 7s, the July 2018 torrential rainfall that exceeded previous rainfall records, the East Japan Typhoon in 2019, and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in January 2024. In response to the Nankai Trough earthquake, which is expected to cause large-scale damage, and to wind and flood damage caused by extreme weather events associated with global warming, disaster mitigation efforts are needed to minimize damage in the future.
In addition, the spread of the new corona virus infection has exposed the vulnerability of cities. Furthermore, the SDGs, efforts toward a decarbonized society, and the issue of population decline are social issues that cannot wait.
In this drastically changing social environment, what kind of future should civil engineering build? We at the Department of Civil Engineering at Nagoya University will continue to make concerted efforts in human resource development and education, in addition to research and technological development in the field of civil engineering, bearing in mind the mission and responsibility that we bear.
We would appreciate your continued support, various opinions and advice to the Department of Civil Engineering, Nagoya University.
